How To Have Good Design Rhythm In The Home

Your Home Lives and Breathes

You must have a natural point of focus in your living space. Most homes have the large screen television as a focal point and all decorations revolve around it accordingly. Many clever home designers, however, use a large fireplace as its focal point from which the home’s interior design radiates. If you don’t have a natural focal point in your space such as a fireplace, you can create one by highlighting a particular piece of furniture or significant object of artwork, or by simply painting a contrasting color in one area. Try to maintain balance, though, so that the focal point doesn’t hog all of the attention.

Interior Design Rhythm of a Home

If we speak about music, we describe rhythm as the beat or the pulse of the arrangement. In interior design, rhythm is all about your visual pattern and its repetition. Rhythm is defined as organized movement and its continuity and recurrence. To achieve these themes in a custom architectural design, the home designer must utilize repetition, progression, transition and contrast. Using these four functions give a sense of movement to your living space. It is actually leading the eye from one design element to another.

Rhythm is all about repetition of design elements that create esoteric type movement within a space. Rhythm may be applied in bold statements that make an obvious suggestion about a path of travel, or it can be more subtly applied to move your eye about a living space without you even realizing the rhythm is there.

In a room example, you would desire bold pop and even exaggerated movement with design and color in the kitchen or family game area, but not necessarily in the office study or bedrooms. In a study one should put the room into the rhythm of a solid progression of style and patterns that would not interfere with the attention needed for the work conducted in the area. Nothing sedentary should be employed, either, but instead a definite progressing of pattern and color should be employed for the room’s personal rhythm. Contrasting design can be employed as an instrument in designing the office study. Decorating a bedroom requires a steady hand on a tranquil rhythm that will foster meditation, sleep and relaxation. Using a small painting, flower or figurine as the beginning of the color collage of the bedroom is a good start for a soothing rhythm. This movement and rhythm can be repetitive and need not progress as much as the rest of the interior designs of the custom home environment.

Alternation is an expression of interior design incorporating the mathematical subconscious for rhythm enhancement. The repetition used can be CACACABACACAC or M23232M or any other combination, so long as the alternation is in keeping with the rhythm you as designer are utilizing for the room.

The elements providing good design rhythm must be inspired by the function of the room itself, but it is safe to list Contrast, Harmony, Repetition, Progression and Alternation as essential rhythm tools and pattern graphics and color as the brushes in the designer’s hands.
